Helen Gregory Born: St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada Resides: St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada “Much of the imagery that I draw upon in my painting stems from my fascination with the act of collecting, whether that is the result of an afternoon spent beach combing along the shores of Newfoundland, mudlarking on the banks of the river Thames while living in London, or merely saving the ephemera of my life as it unfolds. The majority of what I collect tends to be made up of life’s more organic detritus: skulls, bones, little desiccated birds, dead flowers. It is that dichotomy between life and death, growth and decay, and the paradox that something can be both repulsive yet seductive that informs most of my imagery. Through the use of formal compositions combining these disparate elements I hope to suggest a myriad of potential readings as well as a sense of the poetic. I also feel that this combination of skeletal imagery, dead birds, and lush patterning references the Victorian tendency to display taxidermied animals (everything from hunting trophies to dioramas of tiny exotic hummingbirds) alongside opulent textiles in a domestic setting. In some of my more recent painting that could be interpreted as still life. I am referencing the theme of “memento mori” common in 17th century Dutch still life and vanitas painting.”– Helen Gregory, 2006 Click here for Artist Bio (Acrobat Reader required)
