Carol Bajen - Gahm ~ Shifts in Balance
6/26/2008-6/11/2008
My studio in Torbay sits on a thirty foot cliff where I look across the open Atlantic toward central France.
There is a quickness to the weather here. Mist, fog, rain and snow blow across so fast that it seems like time-lapse photography.
I have learned that the weather has a rhythm. A parrell between the weather patterns and my painting process has emerged. My work is abstract. The process I work with is oil paint and alot of glazing, layering, scraping and scratching. The result is that the initial idea of a painting changes over and over again, much the same way the weather changes the landscape around me.
My paintings are about atmosphere within and without. I work to capture the colour, light and emotional context of the places where I have lived and worked. In this way I leave evidence of a human presence over the always changing passage of time.
